After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• work with map and literature
• manage working communication with people
• be able to use professional terminology in foreign language
• manage terrain work and documentation processing
• apply statistical methods, computers, and information technologies for the analysis of geographical reality effectively
• analyse and synthesize individual components of natural environment
• formulate basic problems in the system of natural environment - human society in selected regions
• critically evaluate knowledge related to phenomena, processes, and interrelations in a landscape
• solve particular problems independently, connect their activities with professionals from related branches dealing with environment and landscape
• manage such working (research) teams
• organize communication with a non-geographical community
• adapt in their own work to changing needs of society and practice

The graduates can find employment in design and consultancy companies, departments of civil administration at the local, regional and central levels, in research institutions focusing both on basic and applied research (departments of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic), as well as in the applied research in geography and follow-up branches (Ministry of Environment), in the departments of agriculture, and bodies and institutions of both of these departments, and also at universities and non-profit environmental organizations. The graduates can continue their studies in the doctoral degree programme of the same name.

The standard duration of studies is four semesters. To be admitted to the final state examination students must earn a total of 120 ECTS credits for required, selective, and elective courses. The required courses are the basis of the specialized physical geographical courses and constitute, together with the courses focusing on the preparation of the Bachelor's thesis, 63 credits. The minimum of 39 credits should be earned for further recommended elective courses contributing to the extension of the given scientific base with respect to the preparation of the Master's thesis.

The remaining 18 credits can be earned in optional courses offered in the study plan of the given study programme, or in other courses offered in any other study programme.

During the course of their studies students should follow the Course Catalogue of Geography for the given matriculation year. They can access the Course Catalogues of other programmes and faculties through the faculty/university website.

Within the recommended elective courses, practical training in geography and cartography at various institutions selected by students is included in the 2nd and 3rd semesters, always in the duration of 2 weeks.

The studies are completed by the Master's state examination consisting of the defence of the Master's thesis and oral examination. To be admitted to the Master's state examination the students should earn at least 120 credits of the defined structure and submit their Master's thesis.

The oral part of the state Master's examination consists of individual courses divided into required (General Physical Geography), selective, and elective courses. Students choose from selective (Regional Physical Geography, Landscape Ecology) and elective courses (Geomorphology, Biogeography, Soil Geography - Meteorology, Climatology and Hydrology)- always one from each area of the given offer of the Department of Geography. For each of these courses basic specific areas of examination questions are given on the website.

In their Master's theses students show their ability to solve expert problems, including work with literature, knowledge of basic research, knowledge of field and computer methods, ability to elaborate and interpret results, and also to present them. Topics of the Master's theses are announced by the Department of Geography on the basis of staff proposals, and they are published in the Information System of Masaryk University - IS MU. Students choose the topic from this offer but they have also the possibility to suggest their own topic to the potential supervisor. The content and formal requirements of the Master's thesis are then specified in particular instructions. The final evaluation of the Master's thesis has the form of public discussion.

The graduates in this Master's degree programme may, after fulfilling certain requirements, continue in the doctoral degree programme of Physical Geography at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University.
