The study of history teaching for primary and lower secondary schools aims to prepare teachers in the general educational field of history (in a combination of two subjects) as part of the educational area People and Society defined in the Framework Education Programme for Elementary Education. These studies provide students with integrated knowledge and skills in history and the didactics of history, pedagogical and psychological disciplines based on up-to-date research findings, skills in reflecting the teaching process at corresponding types and levels of schools, the skill of self-reflection in the role of teacher and the acceptance of the moral obligations and ethics of teaching. These studies aim to prepare graduates for the occupation of history teacher at primary and lower secondary school and the corresponding years of extended grammar schools, to develop professional skills and obtain a knowledge of history and associated academic disciplines that will be used by graduates in practice in their teaching work or in their doctoral studies, and to develop graduates’ basic attitudes and values to ensure they become active, responsible and independent members of their professional group. The programme is conceived so as to provide students with a comprehensive overview of historical contexts, the development of global and Czech historiography, the didactics of history and specific branches of historical science such as archiving, historical geography, regional history, the history of culture and the history of science and technology. In addition to this, students have a wide range of selective subjects.

The standard duration of studies is 2 years. To take the final state examination, students must obtain a total of 120 credits in required, selective and elective subjects. Required subjects form the basis of the specialist profiling subjects in the field. Selective subjects are chosen by students based on their own interests and their future professional orientation. All students are obliged to take at least one subject in English from those offered by the department for the given study level. During the course of their studies, students will be guided by the study catalogue for their matriculation year.

In their follow-up Master’s studies of history teaching, graduates of the study field display a wide-ranging knowledge of the academic fields of their subject qualification and their comprehension of these fields, the principles of their structure, and relationships within and beyond the academic fields of their qualification. They display a profound knowledge of branch didactics and curriculum theory, and interpret and assess forms and methods of history teaching. The final state examination is an oral examination. The purpose of this examination is to prove that the graduate is capable of holding a debate at an expert level. The aim of the final state examination is to demonstrate a general overview of basic concepts and results in individual disciplines and the broader connections between them. Students will receive two questions in the oral examination on history and the didactics of history. The final state examination is a public examination held before a committee comprised of a chairman and experts approved by the academic council of the faculty and, in the case of the defence of theses, with the participation of heads of theses and external examiners. The presentation of the principal points of the thesis by the student, the presentation of reviews, responses to the comments of reviewers and a discussion are all standard parts of the defence of a Master’s thesis. During this defence, the students show their ability to formulate new ideas and present conclusions providing new knowledge of the subject considered.
