After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• formulate and explain the classification of their subject
• describe and identify basic phenomena of traditional Czech culture in its historical development
• demonstrate mastery of the basics of scientific work: carry out independent research, write a scientific text, select and apply basic ethnological methods, and define the basic terms of the field
• describe the history of the field of study and its methodology

The employment of graduates is based not only on their professional focus (cultural sphere, state administration, creative industry, tourism), but also on their self-reliance, creativity, and ability to assess and decide; these skills are developed throughout their studies and open a range of possible employment for them.

The standard duration of studies is six semesters. For admittance to the final state examination, students must obtain a minimum of 180 credits for type A/required, type B/selective, and type C/elective courses.

The structure of the type A/required course is based on what is required from the future graduates of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Ethnology. The courses present ethnology as a science, the ethnological aspects of the Central European area with an emphasis on the Czech lands, and the methods and methodology of ethnology. The more experience-oriented courses teach the students to determine their research topic, carry out research, and summarize its results in the form of a scientific text. Students have to pass all the type A/required courses (76 credits); they select optional subject from subject offered by the Department of European Ethnology (70) credits); other elective subjects (5 credits) can be chosen from the courses offered throughout the university. It is strongly recommended that students choose their elective courses from similar fields of study (history, archaeology, art history, religious studies). A study trip in the study programme, whether in the Czech Republic or abroad, forms an integral part of the studies. The students also have to pass the type A/required courses for all students of the Faculty of Arts: philosophy, foreign language, and physical education.

During the course of their studies, students should follow the study catalogue valid for their year of matriculation. The study catalogues for the individual years of matriculation are available at the Faculty of Arts website.

Students undertaking Bachelor’s degree studies in ethnology have to complete compulsory team or individual field research in their first or second year of studies, in which they will acquire practical experience concerning the basic research methods of the study programme. The aim of museum practice, in the third year, is the acquisition of knowledge of working with ethnographic collections, their registers (CES), storage, and getting to know the workings of a museum institution.

The final state examination is an oral exam, examining the knowledge of students of Ethnology in the Bachelor’s degree programme in the following areas: 1) the history and methodology of the field of study; 2) the aspects of traditional material, social, and spiritual culture of the Czech ethnic group in the context of Central Europe; and 3) the specialization in the study programme (B type/selective courses). The defence of the Bachelor’s thesis, the minimum length of which is 70,000 characters), forms a part of the final state examination.

Graduates can (after meeting the conditions for admittance) continue in the Master’s degree programme in Ethnology or in similar fields of study.
