After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• interpret the phenomena of traditional Czech culture in Central European and European settings
• justify and evaluate the results of their research, conducted independently
• compare particular methodological approaches in ethnology
• have a good grasp of the complex ethnic situation in Europe

Graduates with this degree have been educated in ethnologically oriented cultural and social studies. This competence qualifies them to take part in academic and applied research within academic institutions and museums. The training also qualifies them to work for government bodies (local cultural heritage preservation, relations with ethnic minorities), international institutions (in the area of ethnic problems and conflicts), and in news and the mass media (radio, TV, film).

The standard length of the Master’s degree study programme of Ethnology is four semesters, during which students need to earn 120 credits. Type A/required courses (30 credits) form the central part, the students enrol in type B/selective subjects (52 credits) in accordance with the focus of their research. The remaining four credits are obtained from the offer of other fields of study. A study trip in the field of study, whether in the Czech Republic or abroad, forms an integral part of the studies. The students also have to pass the compulsory foreign language courses.

During the course of their studies, students should follow the study catalogue valid for their year of matriculation. The study catalogues for the individual years of matriculation are available at the Faculty of Arts website.

The final state examination is an oral exam, examining the knowledge of students in the following areas: 1) the theory and methodology of the field of study; 2) the historiography of ethnological (ethnographic, folkloristic) research; 3) European cultural history and ethnic issues; and 4) specialization in the field of study. The defence of the Master’s thesis, the minimum length of which is 140,000 characters, forms a part of the final state examination.

Graduates can (after meeting the conditions for admittance) continue in the doctoral degree study programme in ethnology or similar fields of study.
