This Dentistry Master’s study programme aims to provide students with education required to practice dentistry within preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, medical opinion, and monitoring care in accordance with the bill on the qualifications to practice the dentistry profession in healthcare.
Education in dentistry must provide students with skills required for all the activities and interventions within prevention, diagnostics, and treatment of anomalies and diseases of the teeth, gums, jaws, and surrounding tissues and with the necessary qualifications to allow them to practice in accordance with legal regulations and the requirements of neontology.
The new Dentistry study programme was introduced in reaction to the EU effort to ensure a unified system of dentistry education within the European Union to allow student exchange, a single type of education, and a single dentistry degree. The programme places emphasis on deeper knowledge about the head and neck area, mouth, and oral treatments as well as on practical and routine skills of graduates in providing treatment to patients. The programme is designed to prepare graduates for unsupervised dentistry practice as soon as possible after graduation, in both the private and the public sector, or to be able to start training as orthodontists. The length of the study programme has been set at five years as the most common length of a dentistry programme, with dentistry courses making up 50% of all the courses (i.e. at least 2,250 hours out of the total of 4,500 hours in 5 years), not including the summer practical training.
This change has also been triggered by the request of the Czech Dental Chamber, which has called for a quick increase in the number of dentists to prevent an impending shortage of dentists in the Czech Republic. The Chamber also requires graduates who can be licenced directly after graduation. The goals, therefore, is to introduce a five-year study programme with a higher number of dentistry courses compared to other medical courses.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- Provide professional preventive, diagnostic, prosthetics, therapeutic, medical opinion, and monitoring activities, as he/she has the required knowledge about:
- a) Constitution, physiology, and behaviour of healthy and ill individuals and the influence of the natural and social environment on human health, as far as these apply to dentistry.
- b) Structure and function of teeth, mouth, jaws, and surrounding tissues in healthy and ill people and their relationship to the overall health and wellbeing of the patient.
- c) Clinical areas and methods that provide a comprehensive overview of anomalies, lesions, and diseases of teeth, mouth, jaws, and surrounding tissues and preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures.
- d) Appropriate clinical practice thanks to supervised practical training.
Graduates of the five-year Dentistry study programme have the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to practice dentistry as autonomous professionals, start training to earn professional qualifications in the individual dentistry specializations, start training in orthodontics, or work at university dentistry clinics, including as post-graduate research fellows.
The Dentistry programme is designed so as to allow students to earn the qualifications for working in state and private health institutions in accordance with section 26 of Act no. 95/2004 Coll. by completing the programme.
1. The study requirements of the programme are described in the study schedule, which complies with the Masaryk University Study and Examination Regulations (successful completion of all years of the study, i.e. successful completion of all subjects required by the study plan for years 1–5).
2. To complete the Dentistry study programme, students have to earn 300 credits by passing the exams, colloquiums, and advanced Master's state examinations or by fulfilling the requirements to earn non-graded credits, as applicable, within the time period given by the maximum possible length of study.
Besides required courses, student can also choose from elective courses, lectures, and clinical internships. Information about electives can be found in the study schedule for individual years. Moreover, students can register for any courses taught at other Masaryk University faculties that allow registration of students of this programme as elective courses.
The study programme places a greater emphasis on dentistry courses, both theoretical and practical, culminating in a 7-week internship in the 10th semester where students provide comprehensive patient care. During the course of the studies, students also complete four summer trainings (210 hours) to become familiar with the operation of dental care facilities, special materials, technologies, and procedures used in everyday practice.
The five-year full-time study programme includes the following theoretical and practical courses:
a) Basic courses: Medical Chemistry; Medical Biophysics; Medical Biology.
b) Courses in medical biology and general medicine: Anatomy; Histology and Embryology; Physiology; Medical Biochemistry; Pathological Anatomy; Pathological Physiology; Pharmacology; Microbiology; Hygiene; Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology; Radiology; Rehabilitation; Surgery; Internal Medicine, Paediatrics; Otorhinolaryngology; Dermatovenereology; Psychiatry; Neurology; Anaesthesiology.
c) Specialized dentistry courses: Preclinical Dentistry; Materials and Technologies in Dentistry; Gnathology; Oral Histology and Embryology in Dentistry; Prosthodontics in Dentistry; Restorative Dentistry; Preventive Dentistry; Anaesthesia and Sedation in Dentistry; Oral Surgery; Oral Pathology; Clinical Training in Dentistry; Paediatric Dentistry; Orthodontics; Periodontics; Oral Medicine; Oral Radiology – Dental Imaging Methods; Deontological Ethics; Management in Dentistry; Clinical Training in Dentistry.
Content of the advanced Master’s state examinations:
1. Restorative Dentistry; Paediatric Dentistry; Periodontics.
2. Prosthodontics in Dentistry; Orthodontics.
3. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
After completion of the Master's studies, it is possible to continue further studies in any Doctoral degree programme (after satisfying the admission requirements). At the Faculty of Science students can apply for admission to a Doctoral degree in Dentistry.
