The aim of the Master's study programme of Molecular Biology and Genetics is to provide graduates with the expertise to work both in basic research and practical applications based on the approaches of molecular biology.

Graduates acquire the skills and knowledge needed in 1) basic biological disciplines (general biology, genetics, molecular biology, anthropology, microbiology, immunology, biostatistics, physiology of organisms); 2) biochemistry and chemistry (general biochemistry, enzymology, biochemical methods, inorganic, organic, analytical and physical chemistry).

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • creatively and independently perform research work in various fields of experimental biology, especially in molecular biology and genetics
  • participate in research project teams
  • master and apply molecular biological and genetic methods in research and practice in the fields of experimental biology, microbiology, medicine, agriculture, industry and biotechnology
  • present their results in a professional forum

Graduates can find employment especially in the institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences, in specialized institutions and laboratories in health service, veterinary medicine, agriculture, pharmaceutical industry, environmental institutions, and commercial diagnostic and forensic laboratories. They can provide their research and development skills and professional expertise and become leaders of developmental teams.

The profile subjects are Molecular Biology of Prokaryotes, Eukaryotes and Viruses, Genetic Engineering, Human Genetics, Animal Genetics, Plant Genetics, Population Genetics and Developmental Genetics. In addition to these courses, students have the choice of a wide range of other specialized courses. During their thesis preparation, each student acquires important transferable skills and specific expert knowledge. They develop their skills in searching and sorting information, preparing technical texts, mastering specific methodologies, evaluating, presenting results, communicating, critical thinking and in professional discussions.

To be admitted to the final state examination, students must fulfil all the requirements of the study plan and meet the conditions given by the Study and Examination Order of MU. The final state examination consists of two parts: 1) an oral examination in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Special Genetics, Genetic Engineering and Genomics; 2) a Master's thesis defence.
