After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• use both spoken and written language at C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
• manifest theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicology; demonstrate the knowledge of linguistic terminology and be able to use it when explaining specific linguistic issues
• demonstrate the knowledge of society, culture and history of the USA, Great Britain, and other English-speaking countries, be able to identify cultural values and norms and interpret their significance
• show an understanding of major literary movements in British and American literature, their main representatives and significant literary texts and relevant literary terms; be able to analyze literary texts as forms of cultural expression
• have an insight into principles, methods and techniques of teaching English to different age groups and levels of students, including an appropriate choice and use of teaching materials for different groups

The Single-subject Bachelor's degree programme trains students for the position of an instructor in the English language in the contexts of free-time activities in free-time centres, in language schools and courses, possibly in language classes in nurseries, and in adult language education.

The standard length of studies is 3 years. The studies include required subjects and selective subjects. To a certain extent, students may modify their study programme to expand and deepen their knowledge and skills acquired in the required subjects. Required and selective subjects fall into four areas: practical language, linguistics, literature and culture and English language didactics. In the combined studies selective courses are offered in the form of teaching blocks (usually on Saturdays) with strong online support.

Practical training is an obligatory part of the curriculum for this field, taking these forms:

1. Reflected teaching practice (part of the common-core courses, 8 credits in total)

2. Teaching practice + observations A and B (both within the didactic module, 6 credits in total)

The contents of the state exam are as follows:

- English Language and Literature and Methodology

- Thesis defense

- Pedagogical and psychological foundation for Bachelor's degree

The final state examination is designed as a written test (the passmark for all the three individual subtests is 65%). Areas of knowledge and skills that the applicant is to demonstrate in the test include the content listed in the syllabi of all compulsory linguistic, literary and cultural and educational subjects. Emphasis is placed on the practical application of knowledge gained, e.g. in the form of critical work with text. Within the test, the level of written English is also evaluated (C1 according to CEFR). The spoken language at the same level is assessed in the examination of the subject Practical Language 3A - C1 and within the thesis defense (if the applicant submits a Bachelor's thesis at the Department of English, which is almost a must for single-subject studies).

Graduates are able to continue in the follow-up Master’s degree Lower Secondary School and Language School Teacher Training in English Language.
