The goal of the study programme is to prepare specialists who are able to demonstrate extensive general knowledge in all areas of chemistry as well as deep insight into the area of organic chemistry. Active acquisition of theoretical knowledge and mastering practical skills enable them to independently solve specific problems.
Students gain knowledge for understanding the structure of organic molecules and their stereochemistry, their reactivity and mechanisms of their chemical transformations. They get familiar with recent as well as classical methods of organic synthesis and ways of determining the structure and composition of organic compounds, mainly by means of physicochemical methods, by using modern separation techniques and methods for determination and exploration of reaction mechanism.
Students become familiar with the utilisation of basic databases of chemical information sources, methods of molecular modelling as well as laboratory practice aimed at mastering modern laboratory techniques applied in organic synthesis and data measuring and processing.
Graduates are very well prepared, both theoretically and practically, to fulfil demanding tasks in chemical research and practice.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- master theoretical foundations of all chemistry disciplines (inorganic, organic, physical, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, nuclear chemistry, environmental chemistry)
- use a variety of instrumental and physicochemical methods and interpret the results
- work with chemical information sources and chemical literature to get relevant data
- safely handle the chemical compounds and explain and supervise their usage among chemists and non-chemists
- write reports on the results of her/his work and present the results at scientific meetings
- utilise her/his specialization which was bulilt by attending specialized lectures in a specific area
- design and perform chemical experiments in organic synthesis
- analyze experimental results and adjust the experimental set-up accordingly
- identify and solve chemical problems in various areas of science and production
- aware of environmental aspects of chemical research and production
- understand and follow ethical guidelines of scientific research
Graduates can utilise their knowledge of organic chemistry and find employment in chemical industry, pharmaceutical, environmental and food industry, health care and agriculture, both nationally and internationally. They can work especially in research and development laboratories dealing with the synthesis of organic compounds, their separation and analysis, structure elucidation and purification methods, in reference laboratories, in design and commercial institutions. They are well prepared and flexible to become professionals not only within their specializations, the scope of their education enables them to easily adapt to potential employment in branches that go beyond their specializations.
The standard duration of studies is four semesters. To get admitted to the final state examination, students must obtain a total of 120 ECTS credits for compulsory, selective and elective courses. The choice of elective courses is limited since students are obligated to obtain 112 credits for courses in science, mathematics and informatics, including at least 100 credits for chemical sciences.
Each academic year of the study programme there is an obligation for all students to complete a required course C7777 Chemical Compounds Handling with no credit value. They also have to obtain 8 credits for a specialized seminar which is conducted at the department of their Master’s thesis supervisor.
During the course of their studies students should follow the Course catalogue for their year of matriculation. They can access the Course catalogue through the faculty website.
A three-week-long practical training aimed at getting familiar with the way chemical research laboratories outside Masaryk University or chemical manufactures and factories work is an obligatory part of the study plan. Students choose the training site either from a list offered by the Department of Chemistry or they can make their own choice, which requires the Department approval.
The final state exam consists of three mandatory parts: 1) Structure and reactivity of organic molecules and mechanisms of their reactions; 2) Organic synthesis; 3) Methods of structure analysis of organic compounds.
The exam focuses on thorough understanding of the context and knowledge gained in compulsory and selective courses with regard to students’ specializations. The specialization is given by the topic of s Master’s thesis that can be chosen from a list offered by the Department of Chemistry. The thesis is of experimental nature and is supervised by a teacher from the Institute. Its defence is also a part of the exam.
Graduates of chemistry have theoretical and practical knowledge that allows them to pursue their studies in doctoral degree programmes for chemistry or other related natural or technical sciences at the Academy of Sciences or at home and foreign universities.
