Multidisciplinary field of study which, due to the connection of systems thinking, understanding of principles of informatics and elementary knowledge of biology, allows a better understanding of processes in living organisms. Bioinformatics is concerned with the analysis of biological information and offers tools for the interpretation and integration of biological data. Systems biology studies emergent dynamical behaviour of biological systems as a result of interactions inside and outside of the system. To this end, mathematical and computer science methods are used for modelling, simulation and advanced analysis.
This field of study targets students who would like to gain basic knowledge in the area of computer science and at the same time learn to apply this knowledge to the benefit of molecular biology, genetics, medicine and other recently established disciplines, such as bioinformatics, proteomics, and genomics. The main goal of teaching Bioinformatics at the Faculty of Informatics at the bachelor level is to introduce this attractive interdisciplinary field of study to interested students, provide them with the knowledge needed to understand existing problems and equip them with skills needed to solve many of those effectively.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- explain the basic principles of molecular biology, genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics and interpret the data produced and processed in these disciplines;
- explain DNA, RNA and protein sequence and structural data analysis;
- understand mathematical models of biochemical processes and analyze them;
- use the knowledge of important algorithms used in bioinformatics.
A typical graduate should be able to propose methods of analysis of bioinformatic data and choose appropriate computing tools to manipulate and present such data. He or she will be able to administer a computing system for bioinformatic use, install necessary programs and have the ability to modify and combine these programs to obtain results that can be understood and interpreted by biologists, chemists, doctors and other experts without special computing skills. Areas currently using bioinformatics include biology, modern biotechnology, medicine and forensic science. A number of companies, especially abroad, develop software and hardware for scientific and practical bioinformatic needs. The potential for future development in this area is very good.
Standard duration of studies is six semesters. In order to be admitted to take the final state examination, students must acquire in total 180 ECTS credits for required, selective and elective courses. Required subjects constitute the basis of the disciplines. Students choose the selective courses according to their interests and intended professional specialisation. During the course of their studies, students should follow the course catalogue for their year of matriculation. The catalogue shows a recommended course of study including suggestions for selective courses. The final state examination consists of a Bachelor's thesis defence and an oral exam aimed at checking the field-related knowledge of the students. Two questions are randomly drawn for each students before the oral exam. The student is allocated thirty minutes to answer these questions in writing. This written preparation is given to the committee and it constitutes a part of the official protocol about the final exam. Committee members are allowed to ask additional questions to the written preparation, and about other topics related to the drawn questions. The final state examination typically takes about thirty minutes, half of which is taken by the thesis defence and half by the oral exam.

After the completion of the Bachelor’s studies, students may choose to continue their studies in any Master’s degree programme. It is advisable to prepare for further studies field specifics by selecting wisely the elective courses during the Bachelor studies.
