The doctoral study programme of international relations is geared toward preparing highly qualified experts in the field of international relations and international politics. The study is designed for graduates of Master's programmes of international relations, or of related fields of social sciences and humanities. This study is focused particularly on advanced analysis and research in several areas which include theories of international relations, developments and changes of international security environment, strategic studies, international conflicts, foreign and security policies of the Czech Republic and other relevant international actors.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • carry out scientific work in the field
  • develop new research areas
  • apply findings of the discipline to the solution of societal challenges

Graduates of the doctoral study programme of international relations will become highly qualified researchers that will be able to participate in the basic and applied research. Moreover, they will achieve capabilities allowing them to work as academics participating in scientific research and education, and also as experts and analysts capable of working at various institutions of state administration and self-government, and also in private and/or non-profit sectors.

The standard duration of studies is eight semesters.

Students are required to meet all the requirements specified by the customized study plan which they develop together with their supervisor in the first month of their studies and which is subject to approval by the board for doctoral studies.

The plan contains the phases of study, specifies when particular courses in the curriculum will be taken, and includes tasks aiming at publishing in scholarly journals. The supervisor controls whether the plan is fulfilled.

To register for the defence of their dissertation and for the doctoral state examination, students have to earn 240 ECTS, including 220 for compulsory courses and 20 ECTS for elective courses.

Students can take internships at various institutions in the Czech Republic as well as abroad. They may serve at both institutions with which the department has an agreement of cooperation, at institutions where they arranged for an internship on their own initiative (such an internship is subject to approval of the department head).

Serving as interns, students will improve their skills to apply their theoretical knowledge to practice, they will gain new practical skills, develop teamwork skills and individual iniciative together with time management skills.
