The study programme of Microbiology is based on the study of morphology, physiology and genetic properties of microorganisms, mainly prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea), yeasts and filamentous fungi. It includes the influence of microorganisms on the environment, as well as their application in biodegradation of organic pollutants and/or taxonomic study used in the description of novel species. The study programme integrates modern methodology approaches of microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry and analytical chemistry. This approach enables a more reliable and faster identification of clinically and technologically important microorganisms and prepares students for independent research and expert microbiology work.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • manage the principles and application opportunities of microbiology from both theoretical and practical points of view
  • demonstrate special knowledge and skills in the field
  • formulate and justify own conclusions from experimental work and be fully responsible for those conclusions
  • adapt to different fields of microbiology

Good theoretical knowledge with hands-on laboratory experience allow graduates to find employment in the laboratories of health care providers, in food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, in the Czech Academy of Sciences, and also in agricultural enterprises and veterinary practices and other institutions focusing on the environment including the Ministry of Environment.

For successful completion of studies in the standard time (eight semesters), students are required to follow the customized study plan. The study plan is based on the topic of their doctoral thesis and is specified by the supervisor. In the first four semesters, students are obliged to attend all the required courses according to the requirements of the supervisor. Additional selective and elective courses which focus on specialized and profound knowledge in the field of microbiology are offered by the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine.

In the first four semesters, students also assist in teaching and practical training in laboratories (2 hours per week). In the second, third and fourth year of their studies, students attend courses which deepen their knowledge in specific fields of their study programme. During their doctoral study programme, students are obliged to attend specialized seminars, complete an internship in a foreign country, present their results in English at conferences or at specialized seminars.

Students are obliged to publish three articles in international journals with an impact factor (summary IF= 2). The student must be the first author of at least two above-mentioned articles. All the articles must be relevant to the topic of their doctoral thesis. If students are co-authors, they must specify their proportion for every article.

The doctoral thesis should be in the form of a complex of published articles and/or accepted manuscripts or in the form of a monography. It should be available in printed or electronic format, in a text or graphic editor.
