The study programme of Molecular and Cell Biology is focused on the structure, interactions and functions of nucleic acids and proteins in bacterial, plant and animal cells as well as viruses. The aim of this study programme is to use approaches of molecular biology to understand processes taking place in individual cells, tissues and organisms. The field is interdisciplinary and is based on the approaches of biochemistry, genetics, molecular physiology and molecular pathology.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • do independent research in molecular and cell biology
  • master their experimental skills, demonstrate their methodical and technical experience
  • present outcomes of their research work both in oral and written forms
(?)
A broad theoretical background allows graduates to perform creative research work in various research institutes, universities, hospitals and laboratories dealing with virology, microbiology, genetics, biochemistry, immunology, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, and others.

The standard duration of studies is eight semesters. According to the customized study plan, students are required to work systematically on their doctoral thesis and complete all the courses deepening their knowledge of molecular and cell biology.

(a) courses designed to extend the pre-gradual knowledge in the field in a wider context that are usually completed during the first and second semester (one course per semester)

(b) courses designed to deepen their specialized knowledge in the field related to the subject of their doctoral thesis that are usually completed during the first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth semester (one course per semester)

(c) scientific seminars, such as Doctoral Seminar and Life Science Seminar that are mandatory in each semester of the study

(d) participation in teaching of practical courses for pre-gradual students

(e) oral presentation of running results of their doctoral thesis to the members of the doctoral committee at the end of the fourth semester of their studies

(f) oral presentation of the results of their research at an international scientific conference given in English.

(?)
Graduation requirements include accomplishment of the study plans in full extent, passing the state doctoral examination and the defence of the doctoral thesis. The doctoral thesis can be submitted to the defence only in case it is based on the results that were published (or accepted to publication) in an international peer reviewed scientific journal with an impact factor exceeding 1. The student has to be the first author of this paper. This condition cannot be supplemented with other forms of presentation, such as oral and poster presentations, abstracts, and so on.
