Organic chemistry is a discipline that deals with the structure, properties, and reactions of organic molecules and materials. This field is based on general knowledge of the structure of organic molecules, methods for their synthesis and structural analysis, empirical relationships between their structure and chemical behaviour, and methods of organic quantum chemistry and molecular modelling. It deals with the preparation of new organic compounds, chemical reactivity, mechanisms of chemical reactions, monitoring chemical kinetics and stereochemical behaviour, and structural determination of new chemical entities using advanced physicochemical methods, such as: nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, absorption, emission and Raman spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction analysis or chromatographic methods.

The PhD study is useful for gifted students with a broad multidisciplinary perspective across the boundaries of the discipline and with enthusiasm for deep and specialized studies and experimental or theoretical work in above-standard equipped workplaces. The aim of the study is to master theoretical and practical knowledge and skills, gaining the ability to develop the discipline and learning critical and self-critical scientific thinking. In more advanced stages of the study, a considerable degree of autonomy at work on the assigned topics, handling scientific results, ability to write high-quality academic texts in both the Czech and English languages, and active participation in scientific conferences are anticipated. The mission of organic chemistry study is to prepare internationally-competitive, qualified professionals for independent and creative work in both academic and application/corporate spheres.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • use a deep knowledge of the organic chemistry sub-discipline, with a multidisciplinary overlap with other scientific fields
  • use available literature to obtain scientific information
  • design and carry out the synthesis of new organic compounds
  • adopt the principles of basic physicochemical techniques and use them to determine the structure of chemical compounds and to study their reactions
  • use methods of molecular modelling and simple quantum calculations with the help of common commercially available programmes
  • apply their knowledge and skills in solving new scientific problems

The holder of a PhD degree can be employed at universities, institutes of the Academy of Sciences, and in various research institutes and private companies focused on organic chemical and pharmaceutical research. The graduate should be flexible and able to adapt to the requirements of other chemical workplaces, and also be able to use his/her knowledge and ability to work independently in management positions or in fields completely different than the subject of study.

The study plans and programmes of the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University, are guided by the Dean's directive No. 8 /2012 'Teaching and Creation of the Study Programmes'. The study rules are shown in the Course Catalogue of the given study year, containing the recommended curricula. This plan guarantees a continuity of the subjects and provides requirements necessary for completion of university studies within a standard study period. The course of study follows an individual study plan that was designed by the supervisor upon a discussion with the student and approved by the corresponding doctoral committee. The credit value of the courses is determined by the rules defined in the Study and Examination Regulations of the Masaryk University from Feb 1, 2012, and further by the system of variable credit values. In the course of study, the student is required to demonstrate proficiency in academic and professional English. Apart from the scientific work, important parts of the programme are: (a) taking courses to enhance the knowledge in the field beyond Master's degree programmes, (b) taking more specialized courses, (c) participating in doctoral seminars, and (d) assisting in teaching in Bachelor's and Master's programmes. The most important part of the study is to prepare a thesis. All study requirements are available on the website: http://www.sci.muni.cz/en/DoktorskeStudium/Prehled-programu-a-oboru/obor/Organicka-chemie.

The students have the opportunity to visit domestic and foreign laboratories and institutes for further education in the field, consulting or working on joint projects, either via the student exchange programmes, such as Erasmus, or with the support of the institutions and the supervisors. Supporting active students to participate in national and especially international scientific conferences is an integral part of the study.

The requirements for successful study completion are given by the Study and Examination Regulations of Masaryk University from Feb 1, 2012, published on the website of the faculty: http://www.sci.muni.cz/en/DoktorskeStudium/prijimaci-izeni#ukončení-studia.

One part of the proper completion of doctoral studies is the doctoral state examination (the general requirements are given by the Study and Examination Regulations of Masaryk University, Art. No.31). The state examination involves the doctoral thesis defence, in which the candidate demonstrates his/her ability to present the scientific results and understand the problems of a specific sub-discipline as well as a broader field at the current level of knowledge. In particular, the doctoral thesis should comprise: a summary of literature knowledge in the given field, stimulations that were essential for the student’s work, an experimental section showing all performed experiments in detail and the results, which are discussed in the context of the current level of knowledge. In the end, the summary of major results is appended. According to the criteria published on the above web pages of the faculty, the original research results must be published or at least accepted for publication in reputable scientific journals.

The doctoral study is not directly related to other types of education.
