Study-related information
- Parts of the final state examination and its contentFor the defence of the rigorous thesis, it is necessary to submit a manuscript of at least 180,00 thousand characters (written on white A4 paper, numbered sheets bound in solid folders) and to prepare a presentation summarising the research project culminating in the rigorous thesis in 10-15 minutes. The obligatory part of the author's manuscript is the title page, which includes the name of the university, faculty, institute, the title of the thesis, the author's name and the year of preparation, as well as a statement of the originality of the thesis, the table of contents and the list of references. The thesis is submitted in three copies and entered into the IS MU. The defence takes place in front of the departmental committee.
The thesis must contain original results or original elaboration of a comprehensive part of the research problem in the field of ethnology, at a level that corresponds to the publication standard of the field. A monograph or an original manuscript of at least 180,000 characters may be submitted as a rigorous thesis. An unaltered text of a thesis cannot be submitted as a rigorous thesis. The thesis may take the form of a collection of the candidate's published works or works accepted for publication, accompanied by a comprehensive introduction and commentary.
The state examination consists of a defence of the rigorous thesis and the student's answers to questions set from the broader thematic areas (1. the methodology of the field; 2. the historiography of the field; 3. the realities of historical forms of traditional culture, its contemporary forms and issues of ethnic processes and identities). The state examination verifies the student's ability to participate in the professional debate within the current disciplinary discourse and his/her potential to orient himself/herself in the theoretical-methodological concepts applied in the field and the realities addressed by ethnology. - Requirements of the studyThe rigorosum procedure is not a standard study, it is initiated on the basis of the submission of an application and a rigorosum thesis.
