Course objectives
In the course students will learn about the development of the transformation process in the Czech Republic in the 1990s. The course consists of 13 lectures. The teachers (members of the department of economics) describe the process from the systematic point of view first and then concentrate on particular transformation problems – for example monetary and fiscal policy or privatization. The goal of the course is to give an overall view of the whole process. The course is taught in English and concluded with the written exam.

  • 1 Economic history of the CSR introduction into the course, development of the Czechoslovak economy since the Second World War, situation at the end of 1980s 2 The main steps and the economic policy during the transformation economic policy during the transformation process, overall basic view 3 The macroeconomic development development of the basic economic indicators – GDP, unemployment, inflation 4 The development of the fiscal policy analysis of the fiscal policy during the transformation process – budgets, deficits 5 The development of the monetary policy applying monetary policy during the transformation process – tools used, methods and achievements 6 Different explanations of the economic crisis description of the crisis in 1997, different explanations, the role of the government and the central bank in the crisis 7 The privatization process in the Czech economy methods used, the process, achievements, criticisms 8 The development of the exchange rate policy fixed exchange rate, appreciation of the real exchange rate, devaluation and floating 9 The changes on the labour market development of unemployment during the transformation, causes and impacts 10 The changes in foreign trade the main factors in the development, growth in volume, changes in commodity and territorial structure 11 The structural changes in the economy restructuring, impact of the transformation on the structure of the economy 12 The institutional changes during the transformation process change of the law system, bankruptcy law, corruption 13 The comparison of the development in the post-communist countries comparison with Hungary and Poland, description of the differences in economy policy and economic results including privatization process, structure of the economy
