Osnova
  • Before coming to your seminar, you are expected to read the relevant pages from Grammar and Vocabulary for First Certificate specified in the grammar sections of the syllabus (e.g. for Week 1 you are supposed to read pp. 34, 99) and then complete the exercises specified in the homework section (again e.g. for Week 1 p. 35/ex.1,2, p. 99/ex.1).

Also, before the seminar you need to read the Specialist Reading text specified for the given week and familiarise yourselves with the vocabulary (for Week 2 it is Annotation-based Image Retrieval, etc.).

Great emphasis is placed on your out-of-class preparation as there is a lot to cover to prepare you well for the tests and for VB001: coming to seminars without having done your homework equals being marked absent, and there is only a limited number of allowed absences if you wish to complete the course.

Everything that is in the syllabus (including the vocabulary sections and various handouts placed in the Study Materials section of the IS) is essential for passing mid-term/final tests (and also for VB001).

N.B. All page numbers refer to Grammar and Vocabulary for First Certificate and it is necessary that you bring the book to every seminar to allow us to do more practice.

Metody hodnocení
Every student attending the seminar has to sit for two tests - a mid-term test (multiple choice) submitted on one of the days of Week 6 and the final VB036 one (submitted in the last week of the term) which has the following parts - a cloze test, key word transformations, word formations, multiple choice and explanation of IT vocabulary based on the materials recommended. To complete the course, you need to reach at least 60 percent of the total number of points that can be attained for the tests.
You are allowed to be absent from seminars for up to four times: two of these must be properly excused (a letter of excuse signed by a person of authority (doctor, judge) and submitted to the Studies office).
One of the prerequisites for the completion of the course is home preparation and doing assignments.
