- Course objectives
- This course critically examines qualitative approaches applied in psychological research. The philosophical foundations of qualitative research; epistemology and ontology are introduced. Major concepts in phenomenology, grounded theory, narrative research, phenomenological research and other approaches are disscussed. The ability of the students to propose research project, i. e. to formulate research problem, research questions, proper research design, and variety of data collection procedures is being stressed. Students should be able to utilize some approaches to analysis and interpretation. Ethical issues are involved as well.
- Syllabus
- Block 1 Principles of qualitative research. Disciplined inquiry (D.Hiles). Heuristic inquiry (C.Moustakas). Etics in qualitative research. General conceptual framework of qualitative research. Formulation of research problem. Formulation of research questions with appropriate qualitative approaches. Study settings and sampling strategies. Specific data collection methods Interview, narrative interview. Observation, documents. Focus group, diary-in-group reading. Block 2 Variety of qualitative research designs: Grounded theory, Phenomenological analysis (Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis – IPA), Narrativelly oriented inquiry (NOI), Cooperative and collaborative research, Discoursive analysis Block 3 Theoretical saturation and theoretical sampling. Validity and reliability in qualitative research. Report in qualitative research.
