- Course objectives
- The subject will focus on a detailed analysis of the Czechoslovak foreign policy during the so-called First and Second Republic, Nazi occupation and the first years after the war until 1948. On successful completion of the course, students will get a review of the development of the foreign policy in the given period. In particular, they will be able to characterize the most important historical figures, to analyze the trends and events leading to the establishment of the First Czechoslovak Republic, to evaluate the 20 years of its existence, and to explain its end in 1938-1939 and its re-establishment after World War II.

- Syllabus
- 1. Introductory lesson, review of the subject.
- 2. Foreign resistance in 1914-1918 and the establishment of the independent Czechoslovak Republic.
- 3. Czechoslovakia at the peace conference in Paris and the creation of the republic borders in 1918-1920.
- 4. The establishment of the Little Entente (Malá dohoda), the relations with the neighboring countries and the conference in Locarno.
- 5. Foreign policy in the late 1920s.
- 6. The economical crisis and the integration projects in Central Europe.
- 7. National minorities in Czechoslovakia and the foreign political aspects of their problems.
- 8. The critical year of 1938.
- 9. Foreign policy during the so-called Second Czechoslovak Republic.
- 10. Czechoslovak political exiles and the efforts fo the annulment of the Munich Treaty in 1939-1942.
- 11. Foreign resistance and the efforts for the re-establishment of the independent state in 1943-1945.

- Teaching methods
- The course is carried out by the combination of lectures and seminars. The aim of seminar papers is to improve the ability of students to analyze issues of the Czechoslovak foreign policy in the period of 1918-1948 and to work with primary and secondary sources. Readings serve to broaden and deepen the spectrum of knowledge students acquire during lectures.
- Assessment methods
- The classification will include the evaluation of students' essays on given topics (at least 18,000 characters). The final exam will be in the form of a written test examining the students' elementary knowledge of the subject. Overall assessment is composed of the final examination (40 points), midterm written examination (10 points) and essay (10 points). To successfully complete the course, students have to achieve at least 40 points.
