Ability to understand Czech and English professional text. Knowledge of other languages, especially Ukrainian and Russian, is welcome.

Course objectives
The course deals with the historical development of Ukraine and the territories that are now part of Ukraine. The main objective of the course is to understand the main trends in the historical development of the region, its most important actors and the impact of the policies of the former powers on these territories. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to understand the development of Ukraine on an international scale; outline the main milestones of political and military history; interpret the main historical events of the period and use the acquired knowledge to argue at an expert level.

Deepening knowledge of Ukrainian and Eastern European history with emphasis on the 20th century and current events with their global overlap
Syllabus
  • 1) Introduction to the subject, description of available appropriate literature. Introduction to the study of Ukrainian history 2) Foundations of Ukrainian statehood - Kievan Rus, central history of Ukraine 3) The uprising of Bohdan Khmelnitsky and its consequences 4) Ukraine as part of several state formations in the 19th century 5) World War I and its impact on the region 6) The situation after World War I, the futile efforts for Ukrainian independence 7) Ukrainian nationalists (OUN) in the struggle for Ukrainian independence in the interwar period 8) World War II and its impact on the region I 9) World War II and its impact on the region II 10) The post-war situation in Soviet Ukraine, the end of the OUN and UPA resistance, 11) The emergence of independent Ukraine in 1991, dilemmas of Ukrainian politics 12) The Maidan protests, the annexation of Crimea and the beginning of the war in Donbas in 2014 13) The Russian invasion of 2022 - Ukraine's changed international position in the wake of future developments
