Course objectives
The main goal of the course is to introduce gender as a relevant category, and one of the key criteria of social stratification. Gender plays a central role in distribution of social status both in vertical structure and in its substructures. We revise relevant theories at the beginning of the term and then we analyse particular social institutions and themes relevant to the gender structure of society, re/production, the issue of power of the social gender order and mechanisms that reproduce and challenge it.; Learning outcomes: students will learn to apply theoretical concepts to empirical praxis in the field of studies on gendered social institutions, they will learn to interpret and compare the machanisms of reproduction of the gender order. They will improve their writing skills and practice review of colleagues semminar filedwork reports.
Syllabus
  • We revise relevant theories at the beginning of the term and then we analyse particular social institutions and themes relevant to the gender structure of society, re/production, the issue of power of the social gender order and mechanisms that reproduce and challenge it. The themes include the following topics from the gendered structure: Female identity btw. sexuality and motherhood: gender and private sphere (Finzi, Badinter); private and public sphere and gendered organizations (Acker, Bourdieu); social stratification and gender (Stacey, Lockwood); the powerless and powerfull (Badinter, Sokolova, Elshtein); gendered bodies (Connell)and social structure without gender? (Lorber, Mac an Ghaill)
