Course objectives
Unit analyses defines the term "political science" and attempts to answer a basic question: What is politics? In searching to do so it analyses changes in understanding this term and brings up concepts which accompany it: state, society, constitution, political power, division of power, authority, institutions, representation, system of checks and balances, sovereignty, actor, political practice. It doesn't shun some terms loaded with values, such as democracy, absolutism, ideology etc. Some attention is given to concepts on the edge between political science and sociology (participation, socialization, political culture). This unit should therefore equip students with basic terminology used in political science.
