Course objectives
“The Discrete Charm of Diplomacy” course is a one-semester course, the aim of which is to introduce students to the field of diplomacy and diplomatic service in an interactive and original way. The course provides students with a unique insider's view and acquaints them with the functioning and practice of the diplomatic service through regular meetings with prominent Czech and Slovak diplomats. The course will feature a number of leading senior diplomats who have held diplomatic positions at embassies in countries around the world, or at international organizations, and/or participated in the process of formulating Czech foreign policy and its priorities. Students will get a unique opportunity to look behind the scenes of diplomatic practice.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- identify and summarize the basic characteristics of diplomatic practice;
- demonstrate an understanding of the main priorities of the Czech diplomacy in the post-1989 era;
- have a deeper insight into the basic features of the practice of public diplomacy, including the functioning of diplomatic missions, their activities and staff;
- navigate themselves in the possibilities of a diplomatic career;
- identify and describe the basic skills and knowledge necessary for the exercise of the diplomatic profession.
Syllabus
  • The names of individual guests and the dates of their presentations will be specified by the beginning of the autumn semester.
Teaching methods
Guest presentations; space for students’ questions and discussions. Reading of the assigned literature.
Assessment methods
Course completion requirements:
- mandatory participation at guests’ presentations;
- active participation within the class;
- reading of the assigned literature;
- passing of the final online test, which will address the topics discussed during the course and in the assigned readings.
