Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students not only with the theoretical foundations, but also with practical examples of crisis communication. The course is taught with the active participation of experts from practice, who bring to the teaching experience from their daily work. Active participation of students is ensured by presentations of assigned tasks and simulations and discussion about them. The complexity of the course is based on the requirements of the application sphere, as they were processed in the analysis of the labor market. The importance and complexity of crisis communication clearly arises always in emergencies, most recently in the covid-19 pandemic.
Learning outcomes
Through the acquired knowledge, the course prepares future journalists for contact with public relations professionals (in the field of crisis communication) in journalistic practice, but also brings students basic information for employment directly in public relations (in crisis communication). Upon successful completion of this course, students will acquire knowledge and skills that should be mastered by anyone who wants to successfully manage crisis communication, will be able to prepare for possible communication crises and recognize the right time to start crisis communication. They will also gain theoretical knowledge and insight and skills useful in working in PR agencies or communication / press departments. Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to apply the acquired knowledge in practice.

  • 2) Crisis communication: basic messages and principles, the most common mistakes, case studies
  • 3) The world of media, journalists and preparation for communication with them
  • 4) Before the crisis - prevention, preparation, crisis scenario, crisis plan, crisis team
  • 5) Communication strategies in crisis; situational theory of crisis communication
  • 6) Crisis communication tools
  • 7) Crisis communication in social networks
  • 8) Internal crisis communication
  • 9) Ethics in crisis communication + Communication and behavior of a journalist in crises and emergencies
  • 10) Crisis communication in current agency practice I.
  • 11) Crisis communication in current agency practice I.
  • 12) Final presentation of seminar papers, complete strategies - manuals for a specific client

Teaching methods
Lectures, seminars, team work of individual works and practical projects, study of prescribed literature. Simulated teaching under the guidance of mentors from practice. Project-oriented teaching. Developing teamwork.
Assessment methods (in Czech)
Podmínky splnění kurzu: 1) Krátká prezentace konkrétního příkladu krizové komunikace z aktuálního zpravodajství (studenti jednotlivě 13. 10. až 10. 11., v každém termínu cca 4 studenti)
2) Společná práce minitýmů a prezentace návrhů využití nástrojů KK, sociálních sítí a interní komunikace pro konkrétního klienta (pětičlenné minitýmy prezentují své nápady 24. 11. až 8. 12.)
3) Závěrečná prezentace seminárních prací, tj. kompletních strategií – manuálů pro konkrétního klienta. Vypracovávají je společně pětičlenné minitýmy.
