Prerequisites
SOUHLAS
Basics of Public International Law in general and of Humanitarian Law in particular. Perfect knowledge of both written and oral English, knowledge of second language is an advantage. Strong team work and communication skills

Course objectives
The aim of this course is to prepare for the moot court competitions in international humanitarian law: (1) ICRC Regional Humanitarian Law Competition organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross and (2) The Jean-Pictet Competition. By working on a case-study, students should enhance not only their doctrinal knowledge, but also issue-spotting and analytical ability: skills necessary for all capable and thoughtful lawyers. This course will seek to explore the nexus between law and facts, theory and practice.
Syllabus
  • ICRC Study: 1. Legal framework (International Public Law and National Law), 1.1 Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC), 1.2 Relationship between LOAC and Human Rights Law, 2. Situations other than Armed Conflict (Assemblies and Demonstrations, Internal Disturbances and Tensions, State of Emergency, 3. Armed Conflict, 3.1. Non-international armed conflict, 3.2. International armed conflict, 3.3. Internationalized armed conflict, 4. Peace support operations, 5. Specific issues, 6. Prosecution of serious violations of humanitarian law (international criminal law) 6.working on a case study depending on the topic for each year.

Teaching methods
class discussions, presentation of legal arguments from prepared written pleadings (arguing both the applicant and respondent positions of the case)
Assessment methods
preparations of case-studies for each class, final written essay, oral presentation of legal arguments on a given topic.
