fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to apply practically the methods used for examination of the functions of human organ systems. Students will be capable of interpreting the acquired records with respect to physiological processes taking place in human organisms. Next, the students will derive and calculate other parameters and indices routinely used in clinical practice. Students will be able to evaluate the results acquired both by measurement and by calculation, and to explain possible deviations.
Syllabus
  • Evaluation of sensitivity of respiratory center to hypoxia and to hypercapnia.
  • Measurement of basic metabolic rate. Energy output in change of body position. Repay of oxygen debt. Calculation of energy expenditure. Compiling daily diet. Evaluation of nutritional state.
  • Pletysmography (blood flow in forearm).
  • Recruitment and summation in skeletal muscle.
  • Experimental cardiology. Modeling in physiology. Contractility in isolated heart preparations, frequency effect. Electrophysiological methods. Blood pressure – indirect measurement in a man. Electrocardiography. Spectral analysis of blood pressure fluctuations. Compliance of brachial artery. Tension – velocity of contraction relationship in skeletal muscle.
  • Respiration during exercise. High altitude hypoxia.
  • Regulation of blood glucose.
  • Pediatric physiology.
  • Sympathetic nervous activity - thermoregulation. Emotion and learning.

Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is only offered to the students of the study fields the course is directly associated with.
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives

Course objectives
The goal of physiology is to explain the physical and chemical factors that are responsible for the origin, development, and progression of the life. In human physiology, we attempt to explain the specific characteristics and mechanisms of the human body that make it a living being. In the course of lectures, student gets hold of knowledge of general and systematic human physiology, learns how to analyse special text and how to find relevant and substantive information, to cover basic relationships and regulations in living systems, including basic knowledge of biocybernetics. After finishing normal physiology course, the student is acquainted with main basic experimental methods used in physiology, mainly by a form of practices. During practices, the student must get acquainted with current examination methods, used in everyday clinical physiology (e.g. electrocardiography, electroencephalography, electromyography, spirometry), including exercise tests (ergometry). Students must make conclusions from their own measured values. The main outcome of normal physiology studies is therefore to teach the students not only the review of physiology, but also to enable them to get practical skills and support critical scientific way of thinking.
Syllabus
  • Sphygmography.
  • Measurement of basic metabolic rate.Energy output in change of body position. Repay of oxygen debt. Calculation of energy expenditure.
