AJPV_UTPR Introduction to Translation Theory A
B2 - C1 level of English is essential.
The subject builds upon the subject in the previous term - Introduction into the Theory of Translation and it is important to pass the previous course before you enroll into this course.

Course objectives
Translation Theory Seminar will cover the most influential secondary literature and studies dealing with English translation theories /see bellow/.
At the end of the course students should be able to:
understand the basic terms of equivalence based on the theory of invisible translation;
learn more about the essential history of English translations, mostly the translations of Bible;
analyse the translation texts and apply the theoretical knowledge of textual equivalence;
understand and analyse the changing style of modern translations and understand the reasons for the need of modern translation theories in the whole linguistic concepts;
Throughout the semester students are encouraged to link theory in the classroom to practice via practical tasks.

  • * Newmark and his translation concept - word for word translations
  • * textual aspects of modern translations
  • * substitution and equivalence in the modern literature
  • * invisible translation - Venuti
