- Regular monitoring of news and information published on EU web with regards to language issues and challenges in member countries of the EU or in EU institutions. Monitoring of language aspects present speeches and contributions of the Czech politicians both in-country and in EU institutions or elsewhere abroad.

- Course objectives
- 1. Get a complete picture about the status and functions of languages in the EU; of their types, coverage and functions. 2. Enhance the educational and cultural horizons as one of the prerequisites of the high-quality and successful subject-matter-specific and social communication and orientation of the Czech university graduate in the multi-layer EU environment. 3. Contribute to the formation of a tolerant and informed status towards language, communication and cultural diversity as well as towards the understanding of the role of the diversity being an inseparable part of the European identity awareness. 4. Foster the focus on education and culture (also language-oriented) in the native language as integral and enriching components of the European identity.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction: the brief history of the European Union (EU), taxonomy: official procedural / working languages, semi-official and minority languages in the EU. “National”, “state” language. Language politics in the EU. Language care and language regulation on the national (state) levels. 2. Typological overview and characteristics of national languages and minority languages in EU countries. Relationships of the national and minority languages and national and minority cultures. “Nationality” and a language. “Identity” and a language. 3. A) Language-driven communication EU environment: language in politics, science, economy, culture (especially popular and well-known) culture, sport, tourism, etc. B) Nationality- and region-driven environment. Perception of language differences, permeability of languages. 4. Easy-to-reach and open space of the European Union. “Europeanisation” of the communication environment. New aspects of problems related to taking over elements from a foreign language. Reaction of EU societies. Relations between “domestic” – “foreign” – “international” – “global” concepts. Challenges with regards to masculine and feminine forms of surnames. 5. Necessity of a more detailed local orientation in the EU. Reflection in local proper names / toponyms (especially the reduction of exonyms, names of products, organisations, etc.). How “What’s in” influences the selection of the first names. 6. Loosening and process of the relationship between the national language and culture (cultural heritage), influence on educational level and social behaviour. 7. Conclusion: “Euroenglish”, “European identity” – what it means, are there any language attributes linked to these? Care of the national language; mastering and knowledge of foreign language(s). Evolution perspectives. 8. Discussion session with a researcher (political scientist) from the Europeum Institute for European Policy in Prague.

- Teaching methods
- a) Lecture as the key teaching method. Topic is always supported by details / information on European language areas. b) Selected topics (analysis of specific situations, textual analysis, etc.) will be organized as seminars or discussions.
- Assessment methods
- a) Attendance required. 3 missed lessons tolerated. b) Engagement, scope of active participation in and contribution to seminars, discussions and consultations. c) Short seminary work(s) submitted (e.g. political terminology in the official languages of EU, etc.) Final colloquium will be held in groups. Every student is expected to submit a descriptive list of issues (materials, examples) collected based on observations and studies of various areas of language interactions: language used in EU materials, politics, social/public media, culture, science, business, sport, travel, etc. The to-be-submitted materials and the synopsis create the basis for the colloquium. Consultations are possible during the course of the semester.
