Course objectives
The history of art 4 together with the previous subjects (History of Art 1, History of Art 2 and History of Art 3) forms a primary overview of the history of art. They provide basic information about artistic epochs, key works and artists, their wider cultural background. It develops an understanding of the development of art, its importance for the past and present societies, the ability to interpret itself and present its knowledge and conclusions. They become a springboard for further study of art history and preparation for their teaching.
Learning outcomes
The course broadens knowledge and deepens the understanding of the modernist art till the 1950s.
At the end of the course students will be able to understand and explain classification, forms and transformations and dynamics of changes of art in this period.
In addition to the basic facts, they will be able to interpret cultural, historical and technological background of the changes of forms of art.
Students will be able to hand down acquired information, to apply it in their view of their surroundings and to use in orientation in their personal creative development.
Syllabus
  • characteristics of period from the second half of the 19th century till the 1960s of the 20th century and its basic stages
  • art to the end of 19th century (Impressionism; Postimpressionism; Art Nouveau)
  • avant-gardes of the beginning 20th century (Expresionism, Fauvism, Cubism, beginning of abstract art)
  • interwar art movements (Dadaism, Surrealism, International style)
  • art after the Second World War (expressive trend in art after the Second World War)
