Course objectives
The course, which follows the course of Russian History, Culture and Civilization 1, aims at understanding the milestones of Russian history and realities in a European context through up-to-date interpretation and clear explanation. Emphasis is placed on the context within the East Slavic area.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- interpret the major milestones of Russian history along a chronological axis from the beginning of the 19th century to the present day;
- to view the historical events of these periods in the context of East Slavic culture;
- explain the influence of certain events on the development of the language and realities of Russia;
- identify and summarize important features of Russian realia.

  • 1. Russian Empire in the first half of the 19th century. / Painting: the emergence of secular painting. Important painters of the 18th-19th centuries.
  • 2. Russian Empire in the 2nd half of the 19th century. / Classical music. Important composers of the 19th century.
  • 3. Russian Empire in 1900-1917. / Development of theatre.
  • 4. Russia/Soviet Union in 1917-1929. / Fine arts in the 20th century.
  • 5. The Soviet Union in the period 1929-1945. / Ballet.
  • 6. Soviet Union in the period 1945-1953. / Theatre in the 20th century and in the present.
