- Course objectives
- The objective of the course is to focus students learning on a variety of perspectives on historical isssues in British history and to critically explore differing points of view on these issues. Geopolitcs of Great Britain and the United Kingdom will be also discussed. Among the essential aims of the course is to support students development of understanding of British culture.
- Syllabus
- 1. Prehistoric Britain: the Neolithic Era, Prehistoric monuments, Bronz Age Britain, Celtic Britain. 2. Roman Britain: from the Roman invasion to life in Roman Britain. 3. Anglo-Saxon Britain: King Offa, Alfred the Great, the Danes, the Norman triumph. 4. Medieval Britain: from William the Conqueror to the Wars of the Roses. 5. The Tudors Era: Henry VII, Henry VIII, and queen Elizabeth I. 6. The Stuarts Era: James I, Charles I, the English Civil Wars, Cromwell's Protectorate, Restoration period. 7. Hanoverians: from George I to George III. 8. Queen Victoria and Victorian Britain: the growth of British Empire. 9. Towards World War One: the trade union, the Fabian Movement, WWI. 10. From Interbellum period to World War Two: the Irish independence, Hitler and Mussolini, the Munich Agreement, WWII. 11. From Decolonization to Margaret Thatcher: the 'welfare state', the Fall of Empire, Decolonization, Thatcher's governments. 12. Great Britain and Northern Ireland: Irish Free State, IRA, Battle of the Bogside, 'Bloody Sunday', Direct rule. 13. Geopolitics: Great Britain, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Commonwealth, Politics of the U.K.
