Course objectives
The Academic Skills: Listening course includes listening to both monologic and interactive discourse and focuses on listening to lectures, note taking and discussion.
The main objectives of the course are to expose students to different standards of English as well as to different techniques and styles of lecturing.
At the end of the course the students should be able to understand longer stretches of spoken discourse and take orderly notes; they should be able to discuss, explain and critically assess both the contents of the talk and the speaking style of the lecturer.
Syllabus
  • 1.Spoken and written English. Contextualizing the talk.
  • 2.Making predictions about the topic. Listening for main ideas.
  • 3.Note taking without a handout. Using symbols and abbreviations.
  • 4.Note taking with a handout. Using context, morphology and non- verbal cues to guess word meaning.
  • 5.Monitoring understanding. Procedural vocabulary.
  • 6.Assessing speaking styles. Hedging.
  • 7.Listening for specific information. Comparing information from different sources.
  • 8.Asking questions and discussing talk.
  • 9.Summarizing the talk. Retelling talk.
  • 10.Speaker attitude. Personal, cultural and cross-cultural perspectives.

Assessment methods
Weekly double-period sessions
Compulsory presence and participation at seminars.
Preparation includes listening to longer texts which are discussed in groups during the following sessions.
Performance during the sessions is the main critearion for getting the credit.
2 written assignments.
