Prerequisites
B1 level knowledge of English is required. The pre-intermediate student (B1) understands the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters. Can enter unprepared into conversation about familiar topics and connect ideas in a simple way. Can provide information, take messages, give simple instructions and deal with less routine problems, e.g. complaints. Can describe events, experiences, hopes and ambitions; give reasons, explanations of plans and opinions.

Course objectives
By means of practically-oriented topics, students will develop all receptive (reading, listening) and productive (speaking, writing) language skills together with their grammar and vocabulary awareness within B2 level. Course objectives: 1) acquiring specialist terminology for individual disciplines and vocabulary related to a professional career; 2) practising B2 level grammar; 3) enhancing language skills (reading, listening, speaking, writing); 4) practising presentation skills.
Syllabus
  • Consultation 1 Where do you work? Talking about English, jobs and career. (Discussing advantages and disadvantages of various professions. Speaking about the present/future job.) Grammar: Present simple, present continuous. Past simple, past continuous. Future in English.
  • Consultation 2 Education and career. My career. (Discussing qualities and skills needed for getting different jobs, interviews.) Grammar: Present perfect simple, present perfect continuous, passive forms, modals.
  • Consultation 3 Teaching career. Classroom management with the focus on motivation and discipline. Giving assessment. Grammar: Conditionals, articles, countable and uncountable nouns.
  • Consultation 4 Academic language: writing a formal letter. Technology in education. Online learning vs. traditional learning. Grammar: A, some, any, no; reported speech, prepositional phrases.
  • Consultation 5 Various aspects of teaching profession. Burnout syndrome. Grammar: Transitional expressions, phrasal verbs.

Teaching methods
Consultations in the form of seminars designed for teaching English for specific and academic purposes (activities developing students' awareness of language skills and systems within B2 level - independent reading and listening tasks; grammar and vocabulary practice, discussions and presentations, e-learning for grammar and vocabulary practice etc.
Assessment methods
Level B2 language course. Credit requirements: 1) Attendance and active participation in consultations (one absence due to serious reasons is acceptable). 2) Completed assigned units/grammar exercises. 3) Oral presentation. 4) Meeting deadlines. 5) Final exam: A) Written test + terminology: listening (14 marks), reading (12 marks), use of English (20 marks), writing (14 marks), terminology (10 marks). Total: 70 marks. PASS MARK: 65% (45 marks). B)Oral part 1) monologue (introducing student's field of study) - 1 minute + 2) spoken interaction between two students - 6 minutes. Total: 30 marks; PASS MARK = 65 % (20 marks). Student, který nesplní požadavky 1) až 4) nemůže skládat zkoušku z tohoto předmětu! Ústní část zkoušky mohou absolvovat výhradně ti studenti, kteří splní její písemnou část! Only those students who have successfully passed a written part can sit for an oral part of the exam!
