- A keen interest in the culture, history and language varieties of English-speaking countries, fascination in authentic pronunciations of English and a sense of rhythm, are welcome assets of a participant.

- Course objectives
- The seminar will offer ways of exploiting nursery rhymes in teaching young as well as adult learners. The participants will learn to consider all aspects of incorporating this format in a lesson, to plan activities around this format and create their own lessons according to different requirements. They will be given the opportunity to confront their own ideas with those of other participants.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completing this course, students will dispose of a large repertoir of nursery rhymes and songs as part of every nation's culture, and will know how to use these formats not only in teaching young learners but, practicing prosodic pronunciation patterns and dealing with certain aspects of grammar, vocabulary and culture, extend their own and their pupils' understanding of English-speaking countries' cultures.
- Syllabus
- Block 1: - Nursery rhymes and songs as integral part of English culture canon, together with the Bible, full Shakespeare and Alice in Wonderland. - References to Nursery Rhymes in literature and pop culture. - A suggested list of topics as used for 27 years at the TomCat Playgroup. - Incorporation of NR in teaching children and adults. - Practical execution of selected rhymes and songs, with special regard to segmental and suprasegmental pronunciation. - Distribution of topics for practical presentations in Block 2. Block 2: - Students' presentations with ensuing evaluation and discussion. - Exchange of experience using NS in teaching. - Practical execution of Christmas formats.

- Block 1 contains elements of a lecture, workshop and discussion. Block 2 contains the above plus students' own presentations.

- Assessment criteria: active participation in the 12 teaching units 5pts each = 60pts, quality of presentation = up to 40pts, max. total 100pts.
