Course objectives
Students will be able to use their knowledge of literary genres, movements and literary pieces of selected authors in the development of Russian literature of the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries.This subject offers the students an opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the history of Russian literature. It extends and also systematises present knowledge of significant events in Russian literary life in a certain period. The students will learn about the work of individual authors through the practical interpretation of selected texts.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to explain the development of literary trends and movements in the particular period of Russian literature. They will be able to analyse the style of outstanding literary personalities of the period. They will be able to interpret literary pieces.
Syllabus
  • Lecture: 1.Russian classicism, sentimentalism and romanticism. Creation and work of A. S. Pushkin. Creation and work of M. J. Lermontov.
  • 2.Russian realism and critical realism. Natural school. Russian novel and its transformations. Creation and work of N. V. Gogol. Creation and work of F. M. Dostoyevsky. Creation and work of L. N. Tolstoy.
  • 3.Development of Russian drama. N. V. Gogol, A. N. Ostrovsky, A. P. Čechov, M. Gorky
  • 4.So-called "Silver Age literature" - symbolism, the main representatives, So-called "Silver Age literature" – akmeism, the main representatives, So-called "Silver Age literature" – futurism and imaginism
  • 5.Specifics of literature after 1917. Prose and literary development in the 20s and 30s. Literary organizations and personalities
  • 6.Russian emigration. Periodization, specifics, famous representatives and their works
  • The topics of the seminars is thematically linked to the topics of lectures.
