Course objectives
The aim of this course is to provide students with theoretical knowledge from the area of Russian phonetics and phonology. Another aim of this course is to acquaint students with the Russian phonological terminology.
The language of lectures is Russian.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the lecture cycle students will be able to:
- to have basic knowledge of Russian phonetics and phonology,
- to know the differences between Russian and Czech pronunciation,
- to distinguish standard and non-standard Russian pronunciation,
- use in practice the theoretical knowledge gained during the lectures.
Syllabus
  • 1. Phonology. Phoneme. Phonetics and phonology.
  • 2. Articulation phonetics. Articulation organs.
  • 3. Units of the pnohetic system. Supersegmental and segmental units.
  • 4. Stress. Kind of stress. Place of the stress. Characteristics of the Russian stress.
  • 5. Vowels in Russian. Classification of Russian vowels. Labialization. Vowel reduction in Russian.
  • 6-7. Consonants in Russian. Classification of Russian consonants. Palatalization.
  • 8. Vowels' and consonants' changes in speech: positional and combinatorial changes of sounds.
  • 9. Intonation structures in Russian (IS 1-7). Russian in comparison to Czech.
  • 10. Transcription and transliteration.
  • 11. Orthoepy and orthography. Russian pronunciation rules. Orthoepic and orthographic dictionaries of the Russian language.
  • 12. Development of the Russian alphabet.
