Cíle předmětu
The aim of the English for Special Educators B course is to develop students’ language and professional skills harmoniously through a series of tasks that will be completed throughout the semester. Each task targets one or more areas of development. 1. Language Learning Journey - awareness of the language-learning process, autonomous learning. 2. Grammar quizzes - selected B1 grammar topics. 3. Vocabulary collection - building a specialist vocabulary, recognizing collocations. 4. Presentation - reflection/research, cooperation, presentation skills. 5. Peer review - working with colleagues and giving constructive feedback. 6. Article mediation - processing research articles, discussing Sp Ed issues. The topics to be covered in the second part of the course are as follows: 1. Language learning - collocations 2. Physical Impairment 3. Intellectual Disability 4. SLDs (Specific Learning Disorders) 5. ADHD 6. Behavioral Disorders
Výstupy z učení
By the end of the course, students will be able to: - Show good command of selected grammatical structures and vocabulary at the B1 level of the CEFR. - Reflect on their language learning in terms of goals, progress, methods, and strategies. - Prepare and deliver a professional presentation. - Understand, mediate, and discuss a text from their field of study. - Demonstrate good command of specialist vocabulary. - Recognize and make use of collocations. - Successfully participate in a spoken interaction dealing with relevant special needs education issues.

Výukové metody
100-minute seminars developing the skills needed to complete the course tasks. Pair and group work, pair/group/class discussions, grammar quizzes, vocabulary practice.
Metody hodnocení
During the semester, students must complete the following tasks( maximum = 70 points): 1) Formulating language learning goals, mid-term reflection (12 points) 2) Grammar quizzes in class (8 quizzes x 1 pt = 8 points) 3) Presentation (18 points) 4) Peer review (5 points) 5) Article mediation (17 points) 6) Vocabulary collection (10 points) Students need to pass the continuous assessment by collecting 46 points (= 65% out of 70) to be allowed to take the oral exam. If they do not, they will receive an X. Note that they should not have 0 (zero) points in any of the tasks. Final oral exam in the exam period (30 points): 1) Reflection on the language-learning progress 2) Brief presentation of a special needs issue you are interested in. 3) Small-group discussion of a special needs issue. Students need to get at least 19 points (=65%) to pass the exam. The final grade will be based on the total points (continuous assessment tasks + oral exam).
Náhradní absolvování
In the case of an Erasmus or another study stay abroad, students may complete the course online. Students must contact the course coordinator, who will draw up an individual plan for them, specifying which tasks must be completed during the semester and in what way they will have to be modified. Further, the plan will specify the tasks that may be done after returning from the study stay.
