Course objectives
Expansion of vocabulary; Practicing common collocations and chunks; individual approaches to voabulary stratification
Learning outcomes
After successful completion, the student will be able to
- describe and practically apply paradigmatic (synonymy, opposition etc.) and syntagmatic (esp. collocations) relationships in vocabulary;
- explain these using examples in authentic texts;
- describe individual word formation elements and apply them creatively in a context;
- apply tools for practical lexical usge.
Syllabus
  • A text and words in it – a primitive and scientific approach
  • Why making distinction between "word" and "lexeme"
  • Menus as a source of lexical material
  • Guessing hobby: typical vocabulary (word fields and collocations)
  • What can proper names tell us and how to to "translate" them
  • Word formation: system and creativity
  • Compound words: dominoes
  • Derivatives: opposites, little things, big things, opposite sex/gender, etc.
  • "Killing Abbreviations"
  • Phrases and phrasemes: eternal problems
  • Where to get mor information and “help yourself”
  • Making your own vocabulary aids
