Course objectives
The aim of the course is to get the students acquainted with elementary features of the traditional concept of Czech syntax. After completing the course, students will be able to use the acquired knowledge for the practical purpose of translating from foreign languages into Czech.
Learning outcomes
Having participated in the course, students will be able: - to summarize and describe basic principles of traditional Czech syntax; - to identify the individual sentence elements and to explain the composition of simple sentences as well as of complex and compound sentences; - to apply the acquired knowledge using punctuation in simple sentences as well as in complex and compound sentences; - to use the acquired knowledge practically, when translating texts from foreign languages into Czech.
Syllabus
  • 1. Sentence and utterance; structure of a sentence as the elementary unit of the language system. 2. System possibilities for formation of correct Czech sentences. 3. Sentence elements. 4. Syntactic relationships (formal and semantic viewpoints). 5. Hierarchy of the sentence proposition. 6. Sentences with the meaning of necessity, possibility and intention. 7. Negative sentences. 8. Linking sentences. 9. Functional sentence perspective. 10. Communicative function of utterances. The seminar is focused on practical aspects of these topics, i.e. it will include practical exercises dealing with the individual topics. Students will learn to analyze Czech sentences and to apply the knowledge in the process of translation. Exercises in Czech punctuation will be included as well.

The aim of the course is to get the students acquainted with elementary features of the traditional concept of Czech syntax. After completing the course, students will be able to use the acquired knowledge for the practical purpose of translating from foreign languages into Czech.
Syllabus
  • 1. Sentence and utterance; structure of a sentence as the elementary unit of the language system. 2. System possibilities for formation of correct Czech sentences. 3. Sentence elements. 4. Syntactic relationships (formal and semantic viewpoints). 5. Hierarchy of the sentence proposition. 6. Sentences with the meaning of necessity, possibility and intention. 7. Negative sentences. 8. Linking sentences. 9. Functional sentence perspective. 10. Communicative function of utterances. The seminar is focused on practical aspects of these topics, i.e. it will include practical exercises dealing with the individual topics. Students will learn to analyze Czech sentences and to apply the knowledge in the process of translation. Exercises in Czech punctuation will be included as well.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to get the students acquainted with elementary features of the traditional concept of Czech syntax. After completing the course, students will be able to use the acquired knowledge for the practical purpose of translating from foreign languages into Czech.
Learning outcomes
Having participated in the course, students will be able: - to summarize and describe basic principles of traditional Czech syntax; - to identify the individual sentence elements and to explain the composition of simple sentences as well as of complex and compound sentences; - to apply the acquired knowledge using punctuation in simple sentences as well as in complex and compound sentences; - to use the acquired knowledge practically, when translating texts from foreign languages into Czech.
Syllabus
  • 1. Sentence and utterance; structure of a sentence as the elementary unit of the language system. 2. System possibilities for formation of correct Czech sentences. 3. Sentence elements. 4. Syntactic relationships (formal and semantic viewpoints). 5. Hierarchy of the sentence proposition. 6. Sentences with the meaning of necessity, possibility and intention. 7. Negative sentences. 8. Linking sentences. 9. Functional sentence perspective. 10. Communicative function of utterances. The seminar is focused on practical aspects of these topics, i.e. it will include practical exercises dealing with the individual topics. Students will learn to analyze Czech sentences and to apply the knowledge in the process of translation. Exercises in Czech punctuation will be included as well.
