Course objectives
Students will acquire better knowledge of Latin grammar and life in ancient Rome through the methods used in teaching of spoken languages (reading, writing, conversations, listening exercises, language games, text dramatisation, etc.). The course is supplemented with e-learning support enabling students instant feedback to their home preparation.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, student will acquire:
- complete knowledge of morphology of Latin nouns and adjectives;
- advanced knowledge of morphology of Latin pronouns;
- intermediate knowledge of Latin syntax;
- the ability to ask questions and formulate answers in Latin;
- the ability to create a Latin text on selected topic;
- to have a conversation in Latin;
- the understanding of Roman calendar.

  • 1) study instructions, revision of the curriculum of LJ607;
  • 2) cap. IX Pastor et oves (masc. + fem. declinationis III);
  • 3-4) cap. X Bestiae et homines (verba secundum „capio“, vult/volunt, infinitivus act./pass.);
  • 5-6) cap. XI Corpus humanum (neutra declinationis III, accusativus cum infinitivo);
  • 7-8) cap. XII Miles Romanus (declinatio IV masc., adiectiva, comparativus), introduction to Roman military;
  • 9-10) cap. XIII Annus et menses (numeri, declinatio V), introduction to Roman calendar, date conversion in practice;
  • 11) cap. XIV Novus Dies (pronomina, participium praes. act.);
  • 12) cap. XV Magister et Discipuli (pronomina, verba omnium coniugationum act.);
  • 13) revision.

Teaching methods
The course is taught as an interactive seminar, applies the teaching methods used in modern languages, class participation and home preparation are therefore necessary.
Assessment methods
Requirements for successful completion of the course: regular class attendance (students may miss maximum 3 classes without written excuse); active participation in classes; passing the final test (passing limit 70 %). To be allowed to take exam, students have to complete all obligatory exercises in ELF. Alternatively the final test can be replaced by a team project in form of a Latin video clip.
