- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to:
reproduce grammatical rules and paradigms studied within the course (vide syllabus of the course);
use basic Latin grammatical terminology associated with the grammar studied within the course;
apply grammatical rules in translating sentences into Latin and into Czech;
describe the grammatical structure of a clause and distinguish morphological and syntactic devices used in the sentence;
use synonymous expressive means to express selected grammatical phenomena;
learn by heart selected Latin vocabulary (with emphasis on verbs). - Syllabus
- Future active participle, active periphrastic conjugation, supine; subjective and objective genitive.
- Perfect active infinitive, perfect passive infinitive, future active infinitive, future passive infinitive. Use of infinitives in the accusative with infinitive construction.
- Direct questions. Indefinite pronouns (indefinite relative pronouns, indefinite pronouns)
- Nominative with infinitive construction. Construction after verbs iubeo and veto.
- Perfect subjunctive and plusquamperfect subjunctive active and passive.
- Use of the perfect subjunctive and plusquamperfect subjunctive in subordinate clauses (cum historicum, conditional clauses)
- Indirect questions, use of subjuntive, sequence of tenses.
- Gerundive. Use in infinitive constructions.
- Gerund Gerund and gerundive construction, construction after verbs after verbs dare, tradere, mittere, etc.
- Irregular verbs velle, nolle, malle. Negation in Latin - survey of all possibilities.

- Lectures, practice, homework, reading of simple Latin texts, translation.
- Assessment methods
- Several written grammar tests take place during the semester. At the same time, students have to prove knowledge of Latin verbs listed in Novotny's grammar (see bibliography). Attendance to the tests is obligatory. Class attendance is obligatory, students can be absent five times without providing an excuse.
Requirements fot taking an exam:- Reach average success rate of 75% in all the grammar tests;
- Reach success rate of 75% in the last test;
- Reach success rate of 75% in all the verb tests;
- Pass all the online tests.
If students fail the tests, they have to pass a final comprehensive test (they have two attempts).
Exam:
Exam is a written test and an oral examination, which examines the theoretical as well as practical understanding of the Latin grammar covered. In the written test, students have to prove their knowledge of the morphological forms, contained in the book Základní latinská mluvnice by F. Novotný (see recommended bibliography). Students have to show their skills by reading and translating selected passages of Ceasar's Gallic wars (1st and 6th book). Students cannot use a dictionary.
Colloquium:
Students of Classical Greek or other fields of study than Latin language and literature can take colloquium instead of an exam.
Requirements for passing colloquium:- Reach average success rate of 75% in all the grammar tests;
- Pass all the online tests.
If students fail the tests, they have to pass a final comprehensive test (succes rate of 75%). - Language of instruction

- Several written grammar tests take place during the semester. At the same time, students have to prove knowledge of Latin verbs listed in Novotny's grammar (see bibliography). Attendance to the tests is obligatory. Class attendance is obligatory, students can be absent five times without providing an excuse.
Requirements fot taking an exam:- Reach average success rate of 75% in all the grammar tests;
- Reach success rate of 75% in the last test;
- Reach success rate of 75% in all the verb tests;
If students fail the tests, they have to pass a final comprehensive test (they have two attempts).
Exam:
Exam is a written test and an oral examination, which examines the theoretical as well as practical understanding of the Latin grammar covered. In the written test, students have to prove their knowledge of the morphological forms, contained in the book Základní latinská mluvnice by F. Novotný (see recommended bibliography). Students have to show their skills by reading and translating selected passages of Ceasar's Gallic wars (1st and 6th book). Students cannot use a dictionary.
Colloquium:
Students of Classical Greek or other fields of study than Latin language and literature can take colloquium instead of an exam.
Requirements for passing colloquium:- Reach average success rate of 75% in all the grammar tests

- At the end of the course students should be able to:
reproduce grammatical rules and paradigms studied within the course (vide syllabus of the course);
use basic Latin grammatical terminology associated with the grammar studied within the course;

- Future active participle, active periphrastic conjugation, supine; subjective and objective genitive.
- Perfect active infinitive, perfect passive infinitive, future active infinitive, future passive infinitive. Use of infinitives in the accusative with infinitive construction.
- Direct questions. Indefinite pronouns (indefinite relative pronouns, indefinite pronouns)
- Nominative with infinitive construction. Construction after verbs iubeo and veto.
- Perfect conjunctive and plusquamperfect conjunctive active and passive.
- Use of the perfect conjunctive and plusquamperfect conjunctive in subordinate clauses (cum historicum, conditional clauses)
- Indirect questions, conjunctive sequence of tenses.
- Gerundive. Use in infinitive constructions.
- Gerund Gerund and gerundive construction, construction after verbs like dare.
- Irregular verbs velle, nolle, malle Expression of negation in Latin - survey of all possibilities.

- Assessment methods
- Five or six written tests take place during the semester. For passing, the overall grade from the tests must be over 75%. If not, the student has to pass a longer final test. The second part of the exam is the written test and the oral examination, which examines the theoretical as well as practical understanding of the Latin grammar covered. In the written test, students have to prove their knowledge of the morphological forms, contained in the book Základní latinská mluvnice by F. Novotný (see recommended bibliography).
