- Course objectives
- Eugene Nida strongly influenced the development of translation theories in the 1960s. He drew on contemporary tendencies in linguistics (Chomsky) and strove after exactness, as is demonstrated in the title of his book, Toward a Science of Translating. The course will deal with his theories, especially his concern in functional approach (or, "dynamic equivalence"). As an active Bible translator, Nida often demonstrated his theories on material from the Bible. We shall therefore have the opportunity to verify his theories by comparing his examples to the situation in Czech translations.
