Course objectives
The seminar is devoted to interpretation of prosaic and essayistic works of Jan Èep, one of the most popular authors with Christian orientation in the Czech literature of 20th century. Students who will enrol the course, will get the most complete knowedge about author's inter-war works, but also about his mainly essayistic post-war works and his influence (evident and hidden) on modern Czech prose. Čep's literary production will be evidently organically and systematically interpreted within the line of Czech literature in 20th century.

  • The suppositional thematic spheres" - Čep's short-stories as an unique esthetic realization of traditional Christian values - The novel "Hranice stínu" - Jan Èep's opus magnum and its period acceptance - Jan Čep as a translator; the relevance of his works in the context of contemporary European literature - a comparison with works of G. Bernanos, M. Baring, A. Fournier a H. Pourrat - Jan Čep - casual reviewer - Jan Čep and Jan Zahradníèek - a friendship in the lights of their mutual correspondence - Jan Čep as an essayist: a detailed analysis of Čep's radio speeches for Munich station of "Free Europe' - Čep's successors during the period of communist out of time; a few notes about work of Vìroslav Mertl and Lubomír Nakládl
