Course objectives
This course offers an introduction to cinema of the former U.S.S.R. from the end of the war to the end of the U.S.S. R. The attention will be focused on key periods and typical genres, auteur personalities (Mikhail Romm, Andrey Tarkovsky, Andrey Mikhalkov-Konchalovsky, Nikita Mikhalkov, Vasili Shukshin, Gleb Panfilov, Larisa Shepitko, Elem Klimov), including so called poetic cinema and the other production of republic studies (Sergey Paradzhanov, Tengiz Abuladze, Otar Iosseliani, Emil Loteanu, Vytautas Zalakevicius). Literature: Bernard, Jan (1989): Národní kinematografie Sovětského svazu, Praha; Fomin, Valerij (1979): Symfonie filmového plátna, Praha; Horton, Andrew (1992): The Zero Hour :Glasnost and Soviet Cinema in Transition, Princeton.
