Course objectives
After the completion of the course students should be able to deal with the fragments of Presocratic philosophers and to consider and rebuild their cosmological conceptions.

  • 1. The term cosmos. Cosmology and specificity of ancient views on cosmos.
  • 2. The question of sources.
  • 3. Mythological cosmogonies.
  • 4. Cosmological ideas of Milesians.
  • 5. Pythagorean ideas about the Universe (the Cosmos).
  • 6. Heraclitus.
  • 7. The Eleatics.
  • 8. Cosmology of younger physics.

Assessment methods
Credits are given for either of the following:
a) Oral exam - discussion on cosmological and cosmogonical views of a selected pre-socratic philosopher.
OR
b) Collecting of the given number of points in evaluated discussion boards in ELF. (The key to enter the course in ELF: kosmogonie)

The conditions for completion are the same for the full-time students as well as for the students of combined form.
