Course objectives
The course in intended as a sequel of the course “Celts and the ancient Mediterranean world” taught in autumn term 2010. As the Druids, the class of priests of the Celts, according to Caesar, de bello Gallico 6.14.3, didn’t regard it lawful to commit their religious doctrine to writing , we mostly have to rely on Greek and Roman sources (literary reports, inscriptions) when we want get information about the religion and the religious habits and customs of the Celts on the continent. In the course we will read texts of Greek and Roman authors and additionally Roman inscriptions referring to different aspects of Celtic religion in English translation, and we will compare them with other available sources (e.g. archaeological evidence, Gaulish devotional inscriptions in English translation, genuine Celtic medieval texts in English translation) which help us to draw a differentiated picture of what we can call Celtic religion.

  • Greek and Roman authors and their reports about Celts – Celtic religion and myth in the light of Greek and Roman authors – Celtic gods – philological interpretation and critical discussion of these reports of Greek and Roman authors.
