- Course objectives
- Foreign language classes are more or less planned, conducted and evaluated. For the first phase - planning - there are a lot of information sources, such as interactive lesson planning CD roms, teacher's manuals with games, cards, methods, different excercises and of course, thi internet with its wide range of information. But within the classroom, the teacher usually is left alone. The task is to manage the classroom environment, to ensure the student's progress, and even discipline the students if necessary. Less experienced teachers often lose interest and motivation to keep on teaching if something doesn't work out as planned. Why did it go the way it went? How can I improve the next time? Answers to these questions can hardly be found in the materials which are mentionned above.
During this seminar the focus will be on the phases of conducting and evaluating language teaching. Usung classroom observation techniques the own teaching style is observed and evaluated through feedback sesions. At the end of the course students should be able to:
- describe the terms classroom observation, feedback and evaluation and give examples
- understand aims and methods of classroom observation
- differentiate between the forms of observing
- be able to reflect and question the own and the others' teaching style
- fill in an observation form in detail and present it - Syllabus
- The seminar is based on two parts. The first part is focused on the teory of classroom observation such as aims, methods and forms of observing techniques. Also, it is worked on how to document and evaluate an observation. In a next step, we are going to plan and prepare an observation and finally, we will have a look at some examples and "observe" and evalutate.
- In the second part, the student will be more active and teach a "real" language class with "real" students. The other students plan do the observation. The lesson will be recorded on video tape and finally evaluated with the whole group.
