- Course objectives
- Selected works of authors whose writing is characteristic of intense existential reflection (at least in a certain period) will be analysed in this course. Attention will be paid to similarities and differences in the works of individual poets, both in their way of depicting existential contradiction and in their way of looking for values which could represent a solution, e.g. faith, love, childhood, creative work etc. (however, these solutions are often problematic in existential poetry). We will consider not only the development in the works of individual authors and possible sources of inspiration (social and personal traumas, real experience as well as attempts at self-centred stylization or provocation) but also the global perception of the development of 20th century poetry.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
specify basic topics and motives characteristic of existential poetry;
place existential works among corresponding art movements;
interpret reflections coded into sometimes rather complicated metaphors;
demonstrate the variability of creative means on the basis of text analysis;
compare similarities and differences in the works of individual authors;
assess the role of the works in literary development. - Syllabus
