Course objectives
Course abstract (in English):
The course „Documentation Techniques“ explains general principles and standards of drawing documentation of archaeological finds (artefacts) for archaeological reports and publications.
Students can find many study materials and additional information in supportive e-learning course.
In practical teaching, the emphasis is primarily on technical mastery of drawing documentation. Students practise drawing artefacts made of different materials (especially ceramic, stone, metal objects, eventually glass and organic materials).
At the end of this course, students should be able to draw a documentary illustration of an archaeological artefact and make a final table of drawings, correctly prepared to publication.
Syllabus
  • Course syllabus (in English):
  • 1. Informations about the course (Completion requirements, needed drawing materials). General principles and standards of archaeological finds illustration. Important terms: views, sections, measure scale.
  • 2. Illustrations of whole ceramic vessels I: simple cylindrical shapes symmetric about a vertical axis
  • 3. Illustrations of ceramic vessels: rim and base sherds.
  • 4. Illustrations of ceramic vessels and sherds – various types of decoration
  • 5. Illustrations of ceramic vessels or fragments with handles.
  • 6. Reconstructions of ceramic vessels – a) reconstruction of the shape, b) reconstruction of the decoration
  • 7. Illustrations of whole ceramic vessels II - deformed shapes (asymmetric), more complicated shapes or decoration. Drawing of large artefacts – reduced measure.
  • 8. Illustrations of stone artefacts: polished axe How make a final table of drawings, prepared to publication. (Cuting and mounting drawings or using scanner and PC – graphic programs).
  • 9. Illustrations of flint stone artefacts (brief introduction)
  • 10. Illustrations of metal artefacts: iron
  • 11. Illustrations of metal artefacts: bronze and precious metals
  • 12. Brief introduction to ways of documenting the artefacts of other materials (organic materials - bone, wood).
  • Spindle whorls and clay figurines. 13. Brief introduction to ways of documenting the glass artefacts
  • 14. Completion of the course – delivering a final table of drawings. Credits.

Students can find many study materials and additional information in this supportive e-learning course. There are also detailed photo- and video manuals (tutorials) of procedures and methods of drawing documentation for different types of archaeological artefacts.

(Ceramic artefacts - at least 4 drawings: a sherd, decorations and handles, a reconstruction, a whole vessel, a large vessel – reduced size; stone artefacts – at least 1 drawing: polished axe; metal artefacts – at least 3 drawings: iron and bronze artefacts)
