- The subject deals with cultural otherness that concerns individuals as members of defined social groups, their behaviour and life style. This type of otherness will be explained based on the principles of its origin, the discourse practices, and the subjective and objective principles of its bearers and creators. The first thematic part of the lecture will focus on local identities created based on different principles (e.g. ethnicity, social class, community, language, situational social groups) and it will be demonstrated by specific forms of behaviour. The second part will deal with the creation of an image of those Other/Different, whether in non-European space, within Europe, and within the population of the Czech lands. The third part of the lecture series will pay attention to ethnic and language diversity in Europe, and to regional and social diversity of inhabitants living in the Czech lands, which was demonstrated through selected cultural forms in the past.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the above subject cycle, the students will have the capacity of basic orientation in the categories and terms which are associated with the principles of cultural otherness built on the study of society and its culture. When graduating from the subject, the students will be directed to understanding the principles of cultural otherness, and they will be able to describe these aspects using concrete examples.
