Course objectives
The course deals with explanation of the development of Greek culture in the Classical and Hellenistic periods, development of architecture, sculpture, painting, and crafts. Understanding and analysis of styles, artists, and masterpieces. At the end of the course, students should have a systematic knowledge of Greek classical and Hellenistic art, of its stylistic evolution, of the main monuments and contemporary theoretical opinions of specialists.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should have a systematic knowledge of Greek classical and Hellenistic art, of its stylistic evolution, of the main monuments and contemporary theoretical opinions of specialists. Students should know the main orders/styles and schools of the Greek classical and Hellenistic art, their chronological identification, description, and explanation of their meanings.
Syllabus
  • The lecture will explain the most important periods of the development of the Classical and Hellenistic Greek art. Achievements of the ideal naturalistic style and the principles of kalokagathia and the ulterior development in the 4th century and the Hellenistic period. The lecture is followed by the seminar on Greek art.
